Fla. woman broadcasts drunk driving ride live on Periscope
“The streaming Periscope video highlights the dangers of driving while intoxicated through the eyes of a drunk and irresponsible young adult”, police said in their statement.
The Lakeland Police Department, the local police force, took in a number of 911 calls about a drunk driver using Periscope to broadcast herself, which led to an official investigation.
Video United States woman Whitney Beall has been arrested by Florida police after live-streaming herself drunk driving.
One police officer used his personal account to access Periscope and watch Beall driving the auto to ascertain exactly where she was in Lakeland.
Police were actually able to recognize the surrounding area and certain landmarks and finally found Beall sitting in her 2015 Toyota Corolla that actually did have a flat tire on the front driver side.
When officers pulled her over, she hit a curb without applying the brakes.
She was charged with driving under the influence after failing field sobriety tests and refusing a breath test, according to police.
She was booked into the Polk County Jail on DUI charges and was later released on a $500 bond.
“Looking at it through her eyes was just shocking to say the least, ” Lakeland Sgt. Gary Gross told Kerry Sanders on TODAY Tuesday.
So drunk, investigators say, she lost her good sense, announcing to the whole world, she’ll try to get home in her condition. Her tire was flat – undoubtedly from driving off the road multiple times. The caller couldn’t be more specific with the woman’s locations because the driver said that he she had no idea where she was. She also appeared to be disoriented. After 30 years of law enforcement I hadn’t seen anything like this before’.
Her attorney, Lee Cohen, described her as a “young professional with a bright future”. It has also raised awareness among the Lakeland Police Department of the social media platform and emerging technology and is now training its officers to use the service to help prevent further criminal acts.
