Flames sign D Giordano to six-year deal
He had one-year left on his current deal.
Well, that was a little unexpected, but the concerns of Mark Giordano potentially leaving for greener pastures appears to be avoided for now.
The Calgary Flames checked the top task off their summer to-do list by signing captain Mark Giordano to a six-year contract extension. The deal will go until the end of 2021-22.
In the last two seasons, Giordano has gone from good to great – it took until he was nearing, then on, the “wrong” side of 30 to hit an elite-level game.
He watched from the press box as the Flames secured a playoff berth in their last home game of the regular season.
Giordano, 31, is set to enter the final year of a five-year, .1 million contract signed prior to the 2011-12 season.
The Calgary Flames have come to terms with defenseman Mark Giordano on a new contract extension. Despite his age, Giordano is a relatively low mileage purchase, with just 510 National Hockey League games on his resume.
The Flames captain’s extension also solidifies a strong group of defenseman following the acquisition of Dougie Hamilton from the Boston Bruins.
T.J. Brodie, who stepped in as Calgary’s top defenseman when Giordano was injured, is also under contract with a five-year extension finalized last October.
Giordano’s commitment to staying in Calgary until 2022 could have a domino effect on prominent Flames with one year remaining on their respective contracts.
The Flames are still looking to sign young stars Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau to new deals, as they continue their rise in the Western Conference.
“We’ll address all those in due time”, Treliving said.
Now the question is: Is there going be chemistry amongst the three players?
