Flash flooding prompts rescues, closures in Kansas City
Parts of the city received more than six inches of rain, the National Weather service said.
Describing the floods as “dangerous and life-threatening”, the National Weather Service asked residents living near rivers and creeks to take immediate precautions and secure their property.
Flooding was also a major concern.
Shortly after midnight, a flood warning was extended for the metro and outlining areas to remain in effect until 6:15 am.
KCTV reports Westport was one of the hardest-hit areas.
The Kansas City Star reports that the Johnson County Emergency Management office said there were more than 10 water rescues before 11 p.m. due to the flash flooding.
Several streets and intersections were closed as fire crews extinguished the blaze.
The Kansas City Streetcar announced at 10:30 pm that it has resumed service after a delay which began about an hour earler.
Rains and some thunderstorms were forecast in parts of the region on Saturday, but were not expected to cause further flooding, Hawblitzel said.
