Flawless 10 For Dallas Cowboys On Thanksgiving
The Dallas Cowboys (10-1-0) defeated the Washington Redskins (6-4-1) 31 – 26 Thursday in a Week 12 match-up at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. “And it’s just now beginning!” That comeback provided the impetus for a nine-game winning streak for the red-hot Cowboys, who host the arch-rival Redskins in a rematch on Thanksgiving Day. He had eight carries for 39 yards, including a career-long 18-yarder.
Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott had two touchdowns, with Ezekiel Elliott running in two more.
“It was awesome”, Prescott told FOX Sports postgame.
The Redskins ended up losing by five points to the team with the best record in football. The growth that they’ve had and the responsibility we’ve put on them.
After Washington scored again, Prescott scrambled for 7 yards to converted third-and-7 – and Dallas got an extra 15 yards when Whitner was penalized for unnecessary roughness after his hit on the sliding quarterback.
“At critical moments, [Dak] came up with the big plays”, said Garrett.
Certainly not there yet by any stretch – I don’t want to be that unfair to him, but he’s certainly finding a niche for himself and I do see him playing more and more as we move down the home stretch.
Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins had an impressive outing, going 41-for-53 for 449 yards and three touchdowns. Even with a late-season collapse, the Cowboys should have done enough to guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs. The Vikings (6-5) have lost five of six games. Prescott then nearly took off running again before he saw Dez Bryant in 1-on-1 coverage and delivered a strike for a 26-yard gain to the 1.
Gruden will give the players three days off before they return to Redskins Park on Monday to prepare for the Cardinals (4-5-1), who are 1 1/2 games behind the Redskins for the sixth seed going into Sunday’s game against the Falcons in Atlanta.
“I don’t think this football team really views them as rookies”, said thirteen-year veteran tight end Jason Witten. “They were matching some routes and doing a good job of that. So, they challenge you different ways”.
He was averaging more than 100 yards per game the previous three. But Dallas answered with touchdowns each time the Redskins got within a score.
Washington tried to respond by going 50 yards down the field in 11 plays on the following drive.
Earlier this month, Prater made a game-tying 58-yard field goal at the end of regulation at Minnesota and the Lions won in overtime.
For the most part, the defense was awful and could not stop Dallas when it mattered most. And he later missed a 55-yard attempt that was makeable, considering his leg strength and the fact that he was kicking indoors.
Prescott completed 17 of 24 passes for 195 yards and two total touchdowns.
Washington was repeatedly able to march down the field in the first half, but their red zone troubles persisted, preventing them from capitalizing on their opportunities.
Washington is a half-game ahead of the Minnesota Vikings, who dropped to 6-5 with Thursday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. As long as the red-zone defense doesn’t deteriorate – it now ranks 20th, allowing touchdowns on 56% of possessions inside the 20-yard line – that could be enough to enable the franchise to reach its first Super Bowl since the 1995 season.
The Cowboys had a short field on their last touchdown when the Redskins made a decision to go for an onside kick with more than nine minutes left on the game clock. The drive took seven plays to go the distance at 75 yards.
