Flight to Boston Diverted After Pilot Dies
Luckily, the co-pilot was able to land the plane safely in Syracuse, New York.
Details of the medical emergency and the deceased pilot’s name weren’t immediately released.
An American Airlines pilot died mid-flight on Monday while flying from Boston to Phoenix, according to airline officials.
“Unfortunately, our pilot passed away”.
Emergency services met the Airbus A320 aircraft on the ground at Syracuse airport, and after several hours the flight is believed to have continued its journey on to Boston’s Logan worldwide Airport.
Flight 550 left Phoenix at 11:55 pm carrying with 147 passengers and five crew members.
Passenger Peter McSwiggin, of Middleton, Massachusetts said, “But when we went into the quick descent that’s when I thought something’s wrong, this is not right”.
An American Airlines spokesman confirmed the pilot had died, but it was unclear if the death occurred during the flight or after it landed. The plane later completed its leg to Boston.
The airline is “incredibly saddened by this event”, she said.
