Florida Booze Gun Range: Sells Booze, Bullets
In a major reversal, the Daytona Beach City Commission pushed through a gun range, restaurant and bar that once anxious city planners. “It’s no different than them leaving here and going to Outback”, owner Ron Perkinson said.
Of course, a restaurant that serves alcohol and a gun range under one roof has many concerned about safety.
The gun range / bar restaurant combo would be the third of its kind here in the U.S., and Volusia County business owner Ron Perkinson – who already runs a successful gun store at the location off Interstate 95 and worldwide Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach – is looking to expand into an indoor firing range along with a restaurant with a full bar.
In June, the owner of Volusia Top Gun gave Local 6 News a tour of the new facility, promising to keep bullets and beer apart.
The restaurant’s plan was approved with the caveat that it take measures to ensure safety at the range: First, a computer system will track who’s been served alcohol.
If the ID is revealed to belong to someone who ordered alcohol, then that person will be barred from using the gun range.
After hearing the proposal, some of the commissioners voiced their opinion on the matter. “I was leery”, Patrick Henry, another commissioner, explained. In the end, all except one commissioner voted yes for the proposal, reported dbtechno.
The News-Journal reports Commissioner Ruth Trager was the lone holdout as she questioned the developers about how they’ll know whether someone is sober or a felon.
Commissioner Rob Gilliland said that no other gun range has had a problem with even fewer rules, and this business is “a very unique opportunity”, and similar businesses have “proven in other parts of the country [serving booze in a restaurant connected to a gun range is] safe”.
