Florida Coach Jim McElwain Apologizes For Blowing Up At A Player
A video clip of the confrontation surfaced and captured McElwain yelling the following: “Look at me! Don’t look down! (Expletive) be a man!” “You f***ing let your team down”.
“I think we’ve become so politically correct as a society that people think that the climate has changed”. They’ll figure it out.
McElwain said his 94-year-old mother gave him “an earful” after Saturday’s game for his treatment of Taylor. The 5-foot-11, 216-pound RB had racked up 164 yards and three touchdowns through two games. Either Jordan Cronkrite or fellow freshman Jordan Scartlett is expected to start against the Wildcats.
Reached by The Associated Press, Fred Taylor said he was surprised by his son’s demotion. Or are you trying to get the players’ attention? I thought his error in judgement was as egregious as Taylor’s.
At his weekly Monday morning news conference in Gainesville, McElwain moved to defuse the sound and fury, while making it clear he wouldn’t tolerate selfish actions from his players.
I’ve never understood coaches who preach things like discipline and composure and then show none themselves in trying situations. What’s equally surprising is that the head coach wouldn’t mind using harsher penalties to get his point across.
Florida sophomore RB Kelvin Taylor was listed as the third RB on the team’s Monday depth chart following his throat-slash gesture against ECU on Saturday.
“Yeah, I definitely did (learn from it)”. McElwain went completely overboard and said he was “not proud” of it.
Players defended McElwain on Monday.
Senior offensive guard Trip Thurman said he had no problem with McElwain’s sideline explosion.
Funny, that’s exactly how you could describe his display on the sideline. Kelvin knows what he did wrong.
In what was supposed to be a teaching moment, we learned a whole lot. That this is all the “wussification” of America, that we’re being too soft, that this is why kids don’t grow up to be responsible adults.
Taylor is the son of former Florida and National Football League star Fred Taylor and the elder Taylor felt McElwain’s outburst was excessive.
“Martez, we’re going to try to get him out there in some drills this week and see where that knee is”.
