Florida congressman to Coast Guard: Keep searching for teens
Suspending the search means, “if new information comes to light, we have the ability to reopen the case”, said Capt. Fedor.
The Coast Guard had estimated that someone could survive in the warm Atlantic waters for up to five days this time of year, and that the search went until Friday in part because the boys could have been in the boat until Sunday, when it was found capsized. The teens have been missing for one week. But after the boys’ boat was found overturned Sunday, no useful clues turned up. When the two didn’t return as expected, authorities were notified and the U.S. Coast Guard kicked off a search that began shortly after 5 p.m. last Friday.
Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos, both 14, went missing on July 24 after taking the boat into the water on a fishing trip.
The Coast Guard made the announcement at a news conference in Miami Friday. While deputies continue the ocean search, online a fake fundraising site for the Morlock family was shut down today by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, after William’s family said they didn’t set it up.
We are continuing the search for Perry and Austin and not giving up until they are rescued.
The boys bonded through their love of fishing and being on the water, and despite their youth have spent many hours boating with their families and without adult company. “I urge the Coast Guard in the strongest possible terms to continue searching until our boys are found”, Rep. Murphy said.
The 14-year-olds were last seen a week ago Friday on a boat at the Jupiter Inlet.
WEST PALM BEACH – A seventh night of searches for two Florida boys missing at sea has passed with no major break.
Though the boys are young, they were legally operating the boat. The Coast Guard has searched waters from South Florida up through South Carolina without success. “These boys are like mini-MacGyvers”.
But their families say a private hunt for the 14-year-olds will press on.
Many unknowns about the boys’ status persisted throughout the ordeal, including whether they were wearing life jackets and whether they had food or water.
The Coast Guard has scaled down their efforts as there has been no signs of the Florida missing teens.
