Florida courthouse evacuated after murder suspect escapes
It’s unclear how he apparently removed them, but Israel said when Resiles sprinted for the courtroom door a bailiff was unable to catch him.
He’s accused of the September 2014 stabbing death of 59-year-old Jill Halliburton Su, a member of the family that founded the Halliburton oil services company.
Parts of the courthouse were evacuated, and a deputy told people in the lobby to “get as far away from the building as possible, because a fugitive was on the loose”. An arrest affidavit stated she was found with multiple stab wounds in the bathroom of her Davie, Fla., home, and a knife was found outside of the home’s front door, the Sun Sentinel reported.
An eyewitness describes what he saw inside the Broward County Courthouse at the time of the an inmate’s escape from police custody.
Authorities say murder suspect Dayonte Resiles jumped out of a jury box and ran from a courtroom around 9:30am, breaking free of his handcuffs and shackles and ditching his gray prison jumpsuit in a hallway.
Resiles’ lawyer H. Dohn Williams said, “I’m kind of shocked”. “Whether or not he was secure, we will find out when we investigate”, the sheriff said.
Authorities have deployed K9 units, marine patrols and helicopters to assist in the manhunt. Williams said he had no idea his client planned to escape. BSO deputies are also canvassing the area around the courthouse.
Attorney Jim Lewis was in Judge Raag Singhal’s courtroom when Resiles, who is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds, made his dash for freedom.
