Florida Democrats Live On $17 A Day
In a push to pass legislation, 18 Florida lawmakers hope limiting their spending to $17 a day will show those on both sides of the debate the need for a $15 minimum wage.
Besides Florida, New York NY state is additionally contemplating raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour. From Monday to Friday, each of the lawmakers, who are mostly Democrats, will live on just $17 a day-the remains of an $8.05-an-hour paycheck after the costs of taxes, childcare, and housing, reports the AP.
Many are taking to social media, sharing the obstacles they’re facing while trying to budget weekly grocery trips or transportation to and from work.
The minimum wage in Florida is US$8.05 per hour. “Especially if you have a spouse and children”, Kerner said.
Senators Geraldine Thompson and Victor Torres from Orlando and John Cortes from Kissimmee are participating in the minimum wage challenge.
The fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 has succeeded in several cities and now a few in Florida are pushing statewide efforts to do the same.
However, a large percentage of economists doubt the new wage will do much of anything, according to Investor’s Business Daily. “It doesn’t matter what they’re doing, it doesn’t matter what their education is”, Kerner said.
New York state has approved a $15 an hour minimum wage for fast food employees.
