The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release accompanying a YouTube video of the incident that Michael Lee Roberts, 31, was defiant Monday evening when Sgt.
The 31-year-old was told to move his vehicle several times but he refused. Again, Roberts refused to do so. Steven Wegner approached Roberts in the lobby of the jail to tell him that he needed to move his SUV, which was parked in the main entry and near the exit door.
After a patrol deputy instructed Roberts to move his vehicle, the man got into the SUV and began backing down the walkway before hitting a bench. He then accelerated forward with his wheels turned to the right and ran through the landscaping, over some curbing and across the lawn.
Roberts suddenly turned the vehicle around and headed back toward the building, in the grass, and took aim at the deputy’s patrol auto, the sheriff’s office said. Roberts then hit the gas and proceeded to plow through the lawn, making a full circle and ultimately slamming into a flag pole.
