Florida mayor carjacked at gunpoint outside his home
Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett was carjacked at gunpoint outside of his friend’s home early Saturday morning in the same town where Trayvon Martin was killed in 2012. He was approached by three men, one of whom was armed with a gun.
An 18-year-old is being held without bail in the carjacking of a central Florida mayor. It is unclear whether the third man also fled the crash and escaped or was not in the auto at that point. They allegedly pointed a gun at the mayor, then stole his auto keys and his wallet. The mayor’s wallet reportedly had his city identification, two credit cards, a bank card, and $300 cash.
Damarcus Paige, 17, was also arrested in suspicion of the robbery.
In an interview with WESH, the Florida mayor called the experience of getting carjacked and being the victim of a crime “unnerving”. Mayor Triplett said that it was “disheartening” to know that the crime of carjacking could occur “in the city of Sanford”. Nehls says the two younger women had already been shot when a Fulshear police officer arrived and saw the mother with a gun in her hand, apparently preparing to shoot one of her daughters again.
Two suspects, ages and 17 and 18, were later arrested, but Sanford police continue their search for the third.
Based on the information provided by Triplett, the Police Department said it was able to apprehend two people, who were arrested based on probable cause.
The men fled the scene in the mayor’s auto.
A stolen handgun was reportedly found inside the wrecked vehicle.
Paige and Horne are both charged with carjacking with a firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
