Florida mom shoots daughter thinking she was intruder
Campbell fired a single shot that fatally struck Doby in the chest.
Police say the mother had been asleep late Tuesday when she heard someone enter her home.
The intruder, however, was the woman’s 27-year-old daughter.
The St. Cloud police corporal does not say Doby had been shot.
Detectives are investigating the case but say so far the mother’s story matches the evidence. “Please, please … oh my God”.
Sherry Campbell approached her and awoke after she believed an intruder had joined the house in St Cloud and slept in her mattress, Sgt Denise Roberts stated in a declaration.
Ashley Doby was shot dead by her 45-year-old mother Sherry Campbell, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Police said the shooting appears to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors said they were surprised that the shooting took place because of how safe the neighborhood is. The homeowner was also taken to the hospital.
A 911 call was put by Campbell on Wednesday as his stepdaughter put unconscious.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will not be investigating because the shooter was not a police officer.
“That’s really shocking, actually”, said retiree Harry Morris, 80.
Claude Campbell has been a member of the St. Cloud Police Department since 1998, and has served as a detective and undercover officer on several different narcotics units.
This is not the first time in Central Florida where a relative has been mistaken as an intruder in a fatal shooting.
