Florida Mother Shoots, Kills Daughter After Mistaking Her For Intruder
St. Cloud police are investigating an apparent accidental shooting after a homeowner shot her daughter after mistaking her for an intruder. According to the police, the woman was asleep when she heard someone enter her house.
Awoken from an abrupt noise, the woman reached for a.38-caliber pistol from an unknown location and fired at who she believed was a quickly approaching intruder, officials said.
The intruder, however, was the woman’s 27-year-old daughter.
The daughter was taken to a hospital where she died. The mother was also hospitalized. “Please, please … oh my God”. In a recording released by the police, Campbell can be heard saying: “She has a pacemaker”.
St. Cloud police said the homeowner’s story is consistent with physical evidence.
Roberts said the daughter had been visiting from North Carolina and didn’t live in the home.
Someone who resides in home in St. Cloud, Fla., is in law enforcement so the identities of those involved will not be released per Florida statute, according to Sgt. Denise Roberts of the St. Cloud Police Department.
Police said the shooting appears to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.
A Florida television station reported that the mother is a dispatcher at a law enforcement agency.
“That’s really shocking, actually”, said retiree Harry Morris, 80. “I’ve been here for 14 years, and nothing like this has ever happened”. Authorities have asked reporters not to identify the family members because of the husband’s past work as an undercover narcotics officer.
