Florida Republicans Disagree with Trump, But Still Back Him
A similar appeal was made to Republicans in the House of Representatives, according to a senior aide.
The Khans, from Pakistan, have been subject to scrutiny by Donald Trump and his supporters since they took to the stage of the Democratic National Convention Thursday to denounce the Republican presidential nominee for his proposed ban on Muslim immigrants.
The appeal did not generate any help for Trump. Probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say, you tell me, but plenty of people have written that.
“In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents”, said McCain.
At the Democratic convention Khizr Khan paid tribute to his son Humayun’s valor.
In an interview on Monday with PBS NewsHour, Khan accused Trump of responding poorly to criticism on the campaign trail, though the real estate developer often lashes out at his opponents.
Brian Duffy, head of the 1.7-million-member VFW, said in a statement that election year or not, the nation’s oldest and largest war veterans group will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising their right to free speech.
And in a dramatic statement the current U.S. President Barack Obama said Tuesday that Trump is unfit for office and Republicans should think about abandoning their candidate.
“There has to be a point at which you say, ‘Enough, ‘” Obama said.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan praised the sacrifices made by the Khan family, in statements made over the weekend. “They represent the very best of our country”. Obama asked and added that Trump had proved he was “unprepared to be president” through his attacks on the Khans. The Khan family are American citizens, and also Muslim.
“Folks like me who’ve served this country for many years are absolutely disgusted by Donald Trump”, Carney said.
Dale Brown, a maintenance supervisor from Grove City, Ohio, whose son is in the Navy, said Democrats were blowing Trump’s comments out of proportion and had “politicized this by asking that family to speak”.
“This seemingly never-ending parade of insults needs to stop, and the person to lead that effort will be Mr. Trump himself”, Sanford wrote in an email.
“That is how good you have to be if you’re a woman running for president – and she still might lose to this”, she said, with an image of Trump behind her.
“For him to attack a mother who’s grieving for her son is shameful”, Trivedi said.
As for Trump, Scott said, “heading into November, our party must have a laser focus on the issues that will defeat Hillary Clinton”. He said “there was no need” for Trump to comment further, saying “We want to maintain our dignity”.
Ghazala Khan’s response, in a Sunday op-ed in The Washington Post, was heartbreaking. With the general election campaign now squarely underway, Republicans found themselves once again forced to answer questions about the latest boundary-defying pronouncement from Trump at a moment when most would rather be talking about Hillary Clinton’s record.
McCain, a respected politician on national security within the Republican Party and a former prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, is not the only one to criticize Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric. The Republican nominee can’t let go of a perceived slight, no matter the potential damage to his presidential campaign or political reputation. “It is about a sense of decency”, it said.
