Florida State QB Maguire leaves Peach Bowl with injured leg
Houston is riding high after winning the American Athletic Conference, but FSU has to be disappointed after having a lackluster year by their standards.
Florida State began this season with question marks surrounding the quarterback position following the departure of Jameis Winston to the NFL.
Houston backup quarterback Kyle Postma’s 29-yard run set up Ryan Jackson’s game-clinching 2-yard touchdown run with about 2 minutes left. After starting off well, key turnovers and a head injury hindered Golson’s play.
Houston: The Cougars’ only loss to CT came without QB Greg Ward Jr., who was injured. Houston is playing for its second 13-win season. The Cougars open against Oklahoma in Houston.
Tweet of the game: It’s the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, so naturally there was a cow riding a blimp. Ward would slip through FSU’s red zone defense untouched on a quarterback sweep to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.
Everyone knows that stopping Dalvin Cook will be a priority for the Houston defense, and that means stacking the box. While they don’t force many turnovers, only 14 on the year, they definitely stop their opponents from scoring. However, both offenses can put points on the board as the Seminoles averaged 32.3 points per game and the Cougars averaged 40.6 per game. This game will be a classic bout of power offense verses power defense.
HOUSTON, TX – DECEMBER 05: Greg Ward Jr. Houston’s offense has already been mentioned, but special attention should be put on the Cougars’ rushing attack. On the ground, Houston football averages 239.5 yards per game in which Ward tops with 1,141 yards and 19 touchdowns. He threw for 238 yards and a touchdown and also ran the ball 20 times for 67 yards and two more scores. Farrow is expected to return for the Peach Bowl and the running game will be relied on to exploit the Seminoles’ weakness on defense. Travis Rudolph had a huge game, catching seven passes for 201 yards and was a big reason the ‘Noles were in this game.
But Ward answered with a 17-yard pass to Chance Allen to move Houston back up 31-17. This is Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher’s fifth appearance in the Atlanta bowl, including his time as Auburn’s quarterbacks coach in 1997, LSU’s offensive coordinator in 2000 and 2005 and at FSU in 2010. I believe, the game will end up being an offensively driven and will be a battle of endurance between Ward and Cook. Though no matter who is under center, the Seminole offense will center on running back Dalvin Cook, who finished sixth in the nation in rushing. Many thought it was a joke that Cook wasn’t in the top five of Heisman voting, especially when looking at his stats.
“We also found out who the leaders were and who the tough guys were, who the guys were that were mentally strong and could survive that kind of atmosphere”, Herman said. FSU 28, Houston 10. Neither should be able to pull away enough to make this game a blowout. “We won the national championship, three straight ACC championships”.
