Florida suspends QB Harris, CB Tabor for Tennessee game
Florida hasn’t lost to Tennessee since the 2004 season, and if the Gators want to keep that 10-game winning streak alive, they’ll have to do so without two important players. Jones remains the starter and J.T. Barrett the No. 2 quarterback for the Buckeyes’ final nonconference game on Saturday against Western Michigan in Ohio Stadium.
“It hurts because we got a lot of guys that really care about this team”, McElwain said.
Harris did not play in Florida’s win over Kentucky, but split time with Will Grier at quarterback in Florida’s first two games, completing 19 of 27 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 55 yards. Former Vanderbilt receiver Josh Grady will serve as the backup and could see playing time in special packages.
With Harris sidelined, McElwain told reporters that Grier will have “an opportunity to run the ship”.
Three other Gators have previously been suspended this season: Defensive lineman Alex McCalister and safety Marcus Maye missed the opener, and receiver Latroy Pittman sat out the first two games for violating department rules. “I anticipate everyone to be available and ready to play, but it’s a practice-by-pracitce and hour-by-hour situation when you head out onto the practice field starting today”.
Tabor’s suspension moves Quincy Wilson in the starting lineup.
Even though Tabor is considered a reserve, he was instrumental in Florida’s win over East Carolina in Week 2 with an 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Harris also played a key role in that game, coming off the bench to direct both the Gators’ scoring drives in relief of ineffective starter Jeff Driskel. The first one was set up by Tabor, who sacked Justin Worley, knocked the ball loose and recovered the fumble at the Vols 30.
