Florida winners of $1.58BN Powerball step forward 5 weeks after jackpot
David Kaltschmidt, 55, and Maureen Smith, 70, were revealed as the Florida winners of the January 13 drawing at a press conference at the state lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.
One of three winning tickets was purchased from a Publix supermarket in Melbourne.
A third winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California.
A Florida couple claimed their share of last month’s record $1.6 billion U.S. Powerball lottery jackpot on Wednesday, coming forward with the second of the three winning tickets. The winners previously had not come forward publicly to claim the prize. They said they realized they had the winning numbers the next morning.
For now, Kaltschmidt said he plans to retire after 34 years as an engineer. “We kept watching TV, going online, and then they announced Publix Melbourne Beach and I said, ‘Uh-oh'”.
To win the grand prize, the ticket must match all five numbers, in any order, and the red Powerball number, according to CNN Money.
The current estimated jackpot for tonight’s US Powerball lottery draw is $189 million.
“That was hard”, said Smith.
Iowa Lottery officials say the record Powerball jackpot in January helped send lottery ticket sales soaring to new records.

WTVJ Florida Lottery Secretary Tom Delacenserie presents Kaltschmidt and Smith with a check for $528 million Wednesday.
“I’d be very surprised if they’re still our neighbors”, he said.
The Robinsons also took their prize in a lump sum, NBC News reports.
The husband and wife, together since 1980, are originally from Long Island, New York, but moved to Melbourne Beach in 1991.
