Florida Wins SEC East with Last-Minute Goal-Line Stand Against LSU
LSU will be looking for a head coach in earnest as after last week’s loss it is unlikely Ed Orgeron will be retained.
The former is gone and the latter is in serious doubt.
“We didn’t execute”, said Orgeron. Had a chance to win. Win the game. Right call.
But they didn’t and LSU is a 6-4 football team.
“That touchdown’s not supposed to happen”, Battle said. Back in September there were dreams of division, conference and national championships. The Tigers looked weak, uninspired, and out of place throughout the entire game.
The game was moved to Baton Rouge and replaced South Alabama’s slot on the Tigers’ schedule. Scarlett followed last week’s 134-yard effort against SC with 22 carries for 108 yards against LSU.
Scarlett ate up the clock and the LSU defense in the second half, ripping off three carries of at least 10 yards in the second half and finishing the game with 108 yards on 22 carries.
“We were terrified of them boys”, Florida cornerback Jalen Tabor said after the game with a smile. It seemed like they were incapable of completing a pass for more than two yards in the first half. “We just gotta keep taking care of business”. After the game, LSU receiver D.J.
LSU, which led 7-3 at the half, also reached a second and goal at the 3-yard yard line early in the third quarter in what was a second opportunity to go up 14-3.
After all of the talk about Florida being “scared” to play LSU in Baton Rouge stemming from the infamous rescheduling fiasco – and then a pre-game scuffle erupted between members of both teams – the Gators had plenty to prove against the Tigers.
Georgia 35, Louisiana-Lafayette 21: In Athens, Ga., Isaiah McKenzie scored on a 55-yard run on Georgia’s first play and added a touchdown on an 82-yard punt return midway through the first quarter. Poor red zone play. Exact same play. I did my job holding the safety, I had great protection and gave him a chance and he went and made the play. Unlike the second set, the Volunteers managed to take the lead back. Whoever can run better should win. They also have talent. They joined each other in the championship game again past year, when Bama’s two-touchdown win was probably more lopsided than the final score suggested.
Despite the tougher opponent, LSU dominated most of the statistics except the one that mattered. They lost at LSU a year ago and at Tennessee and at Arkansas this season.
Fournette ran 12 times for 40 yards, turning over lead-back duties to Guice. Tailback Derrius Guice fumbled on the first of those. “Like I said, everybody has games like that”. He threw a 1-yard “jump pass” to Austin Cantrell in the third quarter to give the Hogs a 44-21 lead. They clinched the SEC East with the victory, and you know McElwain felt some extra satisfaction with the victory.
“This is a home game for us”. Fournette’s absence was most painful at the end of the game, however. When LSU emerged for the kickoff, Fournette was in full gear.
They could have used his support then. One day we’ll get a “You are looking live at the much ballyhooed Colby Delahoussaye” and I will make it my ringtone. Even worse, Guice ran the wrong way on the play before cutting back toward the left and attempting to dive over the pile.
Now with the Aggies looming on Thanksgiving and a minor bowl game on the horizon, we’ll see if the Tigers follow suit. This year, Vanderbilt’s April would put them in position to earn one of those spots.
“We think there’s still a lot to play for”, said Etling. It was a good thing the Gators had Scarlett, because outside of him they totaled just 162 yards. “We knew it was going to be a run. That’s all we’re doing”.
