Floyd Mayweather Jr. quits boxing with ‘nothing left to prove’ after defeating
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has quit his boxing profession with “nothing left to prove” after he defeated Andre Berto in his final match in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. signed off from professional boxing as he had planned on Saturday, going out unbeaten and on his own terms as “The Best Ever” after improving his career record to 49-0. “I’m close to 40 years old”.
Following his win against Berto, Mayweather announced his retirement from the sport of boxing. I made great investments, I’m financially stable, well off. I had a great career. But skeptics say he may have one more fight in him.
Mayweather will be retiring with a record of 49-0 and while he’s adamant that he’s all done, his father has hinted otherwise.
“I want to thank all the fans… for 19 years I would not be able to do it without these fans”, he said, after the judges ruled it 118-110, 117-111 and 120-108, all to the champ.
By the late rounds, Mayweather was both talking to Berto (30-4) and taunting him, secure in the knowledge he was winning big against the 18-1 underdog.
Andre Berto tried to do what has been attempted 48 times before: give Floyd Mayweather his first “L”.
Berto, however, paid tribute to Mayweather after a sometimes prickly fight that included the referee telling the two fighters to stop trash-talking one another in the ring. Im leaving with all my faculties.
Even when he had Mayweather against the ropes Berto found it hard to connect with anything meaningful. “I’ve broken all records”.
“I pushed him to the limit”, Berto said.
Floyd then goes on to talk about working with Al Haymon and continuing to work with his young stable of fighters, and says he’s happy to let them shine now that he’s done everything there is to do in the sport.
In a cheeky Instagram post during the Mayweather fight, Manny published a video of himself playing the digital piano and captioned it: “What I do when I’m bored”. I knew he would be a tough competitor. It remains to be seen if Mayweather will infact remain retired, but his legacy has already been written and he will go down in history as the best boxer of his generation.
Asked if he might be tempted to come back for a 50th fight, he replied: “My career is over…”
