CDC has helped more than 60 countries build surveillance and laboratory capacity to rapidly detect and respond to influenza threats, including viruses with the potential to cause global pandemics. One possible reason is that H3N2 mutates faster than other flu viruses. As a result, flu season usually strikes later than in other regions.
According to the HSE’s weekly surveillance report, the week ending on 7 January saw the highest rate of people contracting either one of the flu viruses this year, with the majority of cases being among people aged between 15 – 64, followed by people above the age of 65. The flu is contagious up to seven days after a person gets sick. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective.
