Foo Fighters ‘Rickroll’ Westboro Baptist Church
The Rick Roll meme has existed for a long time, with people using a bait-and-switch method to trick someone into viewing the video, although it’s unclear whether this has been used on the Westboro Baptist Church (we sincerely hope that it has).
By Chris CookeThat insane Westboro Baptist Church bunch set themselves up outside a Foo Fighters gig on Friday to do one of their insane protests.
So imagine how the Westboro bunch must have felt when crowds around them cheered as Dave Grohl and co. pulled up in a pickup blasting Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.
The band had signs reading, “You got Rick roll’d (again)” and “Keep it clean”.
The Topeka, Kansas, church is known for protesting funerals and other notable events, its members holding signs with inflammatory inscriptions such as “God hates fags”.
After the Rickrolling incident, Westboro replied on Twitter that they were going to continue with their anti-gay protests, calling the Foo Fighters’ actions “totes lame & unhelpful”.
Addressing fans at the concert later that night as he introduced the track My Hero, Grohl said: “You can’t just sit there and do nothing; you got to go out and say what you want to say”.
This isn’t actually the first time Foo Fighters have encountered the group-back in 2011 they made fun of the Church by dressing up as truckers and performing in front of them.
