Football coach reportedly punches journalist at airport
After Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-1 to clinch the nation’s seventh Gold Cup title on Sunday, Mexico manager Miguel Herrera hit television commentator Christian Martinoli at the Philadelphia airport Monday morning, according to a report from Azteca’s Devid Medrano.
Martinoli, who has been critical of Herrera during El Tri’s Gold Cup run, told AS Mexico that he ran into the Mexico national team when he got past security at the airport.
Herrera is alleged to have swung for the reporter’s face, but missed and caught his neck instead, while the coach’s daughter has been accused of slapping Martinoli.
Miguel Herrera’s mad ways on the sidelines made him a legend at the 2014 Federation Internationale de Football Association World Cup, but his passion might have boiled over recently, potentially landing him in serious trouble. “We were arguing and I pushed him”.
Univision reported Tuesday Mexico players Giovani dos Santos and Jonathan dos Santos posted messages on Twitter in support of Herrera’s actions toward Martinoli.
“I’m not that stupid”, Herrera added.
Azteca issued a statement calling for “a prompt and urgent investigation” of the incident. “The Mexican Soccer Federation should not allow attacks like the one suffered by our colleague”.
