For 10 years, possibly biggest pearl was hidden under bed
Media reports say the pearl, if verified, could be worth up to an impressive $100 million.
The giant pearl measures in at 1 ft. wide, 2.2 ft. long and weighs 75 lb.
The current title holder for the largest natural giant clam pearl is the 14-pound Pearl of Lao Tzu, which was discovered in Palawan waters.
A fisherman from Puerto Princesa, a coastal city on Palawan Island in the Philippines, has revealed what could be the largest natural pearl in the world. According to Puerto Princesa City Tourism Officer Aileen Cynthia Amurao, the aunt of the fisherman, the man kept the pearl, weighing 34 kilograms (75 pounds), under a wooden bed in his house as a good-luck charm.
The pearl is on display in the atrium of the New Green City Hall in Puerto Princesa.
“He said every time he goes out for fishing he will touch the pearl”, Maggay-Amurao said.
Giant clams, which rarely produce pearls, can grow as large as four feet in length and weigh 500 pounds. Hopefully, the man who found it won’t have any trouble getting (at the very least) a generous finder’s fee for the pearl.
It was also found in the Philippines, off the west coast in the Palawan sea.
She said that she, the fisherman and his family made a decision to turn over the pearl to the city mayor, who had it displayed in a glass case in Puerto Princesa’s city hall to attract tourists. For him, it was just a good luck charm. Its owner had “almost forgotten everything about the pearl until he was moving out, and he remembered he had something under his bed”, Ms. Amurao told CNN.
So how did this fisherman happen upon this massive pearl? She added that as of now, depending upon the research on the internet, no recorded article or piece of information has been found regarding this type and size of pearl.
The tourism officer said they were amazed when the fisherman brought it to them and now they’re waiting for gemologists to fully certify this piece of treasure.
A spokesperson from the local tourism office said the pearl will remain in the area for now and hopes it will pull in tourists..
