Force Awakens Box Office Surpasses Jurassic World Globally
Globally, the latest Star Wars epic raked in an estimated US$517 million, breaking records for the biggest opening weekend in 18 other countries, including Russian Federation and Germany.
Disney plans four “Star Wars” movies through 2019, plus major expansions at its us theme parks to incorporate the droids, spaceships and otherworldly creatures of the universe Lucas invented.
“The Force Awakens” posted the biggest Thursday night gross of all time in North America with $57 million, beating the $43 million that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” grossed in July 2011.
The film, the seventh installment in a newly rebooted “Star Wars” franchise, garnered the biggest opening weekend both domestically and internationally, and pushed Disney’s 2015 box office gross past the $5 billion mark.
“Star Wars” now rules the box office galaxy. Abrams said, “Let’s say that it was in that conversation [in Paris] that we began to see a way that being in the movie would be worth his time and the audience’s”. Only the lack of a simultaneous China opening kept The Force Awakens from topping Jurassic World as the top overall weekend ever.
The global totals are all the more impressive because “The Force Awakens” has yet to open in China, the world’s second biggest film market. In my personal rankings, I’d slot it third, behind The Empire Strikes Back (for originality, script, that reveal and more) and the original Star Wars (for being the originator and its overall cultural impact). After this had gone on for too long, the theater stopped the screening and promised to rewind the film back to where the problems had begun.
The industry also awaits to see if the “Star Wars'” force can help push U.S.-Canada ticket sales to a record $11 billion.
Official poster for the movie Star Wars The Force Awakens. It earned only $14 million. According to rottentomatoes.com, the film did not disappoint, with a 95% score. Disney made an effort to build buzz, placing 500 miniature Stormtroopers at the Great Wall and striking a deal to stream the six earlier “Star Wars” films through video service Tencent.
There’s probably no way to escape Star Wars news this Christmas, regardless of whether you love the saga or you haven’t actually seen any of the seven episodes.
