‘Force Awakens’ smashes opening-day mark

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is one of those rare motion pictures that is an event as much as it is a film.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke the opening weekend box office record.
It smashed the biggest Friday and biggest single-day record in North America, exceeding the 91 million US dollars of “Deathly Hallows 2” by 29.5 million.
The highly anticipated Force Awakens has blazed a record-setting trail since its domestic debut Thursday, breaking the record for highest-grossing domestic opening night with US$57 million and biggest single-day sales on Friday with US$120.5 million. This obliterates the former domestic opening record held by Jurassic World, which debuted to $208.8 million back in June.
Overseas, “The Force Awakens” opened to $279 million as it played in every major market except China, India and Greece.
Despite raking in some $517 million worldwide on its opening weekend, it wasn’t enough to knock Jurassic World off the top spot. Through Friday, global ticket sales had reached $129.5 million, as the movie set opening-day records in Britain, Germany, Australia, Brazil and other countries. The film has already grossed more than $250 million worldwide.
Disney paid just over $4 billion U.S. for Lucasfilm, the production company behind Star Wars, in 2012, an investment that now appears to be paying off. Sequels and spinoffs are in development for years to come.
That’s a deal separate from the Star Wars deal though, which means if you’re looking to stream the original six movies you’re going to be very disappointed.

The film enjoyed not only the biggest opening day of all time but also the biggest 4 day opening weekend of all time.
Audiences awarded an “A” rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore, Disney said.
The trend, if it holds, would also mark the first time a movie has surpassed $100 million so soon, Walt Disney Co said in an e-mailed statement, topping the mark held by a Harry Potter picture.
