Ford gives a glimpse of an upcoming SUV that’s not the Bronco
Ford North America product communications manager Mike Levine said the rollout will begin with the 2019 Ford Edge and continue to progress as the new versions of each vehicle is produced, with most Fords offering Co-Pilot360 standard by 2020. The automaker believes that by 2020, SUV sales will represent 50% of all vehicle sales. Ford calls it “a performance battery electric utility” and says it will be with us by 2020.
“By 2021, we expect to surpass Toyota to be number one in hybrids”, he told journalists. Ford is now No. 2.
It is said that by 2021, Ford will be selling more hybrid cars to the USA than Toyota. However, the company has hinted at using hybrid technology for the Bronco and the hybrid system on the F-150 might just be a ideal fit.
Ford sold almost 900,000 F-Series pickup trucks in the US last year, more than any other vehicle of any type from any manufacturer.
It emphasized SUVs, hybrids, and battery electric vehicles. “This showroom transformation will thrill customers, drive profitable growth and further build toward our future of smart vehicles for a smart world”. But with sales soft and its stock prices stock in low, low gear, Ford executives clearly felt they needed to show investors that they have a convincing plan to boost profits and margins in the not-too-distant future. “We don’t just want to be in the generic SUV business”. Farley cites the F-150 Raptor as the flawless example of that, a performance truck – which, the exec points out, outsold Porsche’s entire auto lineup in the USA 2017 – that balances speed, on-road comfort, and flexibility. These additions include the new Edge ST SUV and a soon-to-follow Explorer ST.
“Our commercial customers trust our trucks to get the job done”, Farley said. He added, “Both are for the growing trend of people wanting to simplify their lives.to get outdoors. and get away with their family and friends”. “For Jeep, that’s rock-crawling in Moab”.
Ford also teased this yet-to-be-named small off-road utility vehicle. It is cutting that to two or three, he said.
The money will be used to create an army of eight SUV models, placing the carmaker among the few brands with more than six such vehicles in their lineup. “After recently introducing an all-new model at each end of the SUV spectrum – the subcompact EcoSport and full-size Expedition – Ford’s next push is in the highest volume SUV segments”. Ford is working continuously to improve its profitability with its product development process.
The CEO’s so-called “fitness” initiatives that include slashing $14 billion in costs over five years also are helping toward the profit efforts.
Ford Australia has been asked for comment on how the North American plans would affect the company’s products sold here.
