Forest floor ‘breathes’ in freaky video
One person describes it as “creepy and scary”, while others refer to it as “Mother Earth breathing” and a “floating forest”.
Although the “breathing” ground is a phenomenon, what’s really going on is quite simple.
Living things breathe: trees, bracken, flowers, weeds, vines and everything else that makes up the forest floor. Taken by a hiker in a Canadian forest, the viral video of the breathing forest floor continues to puzzle many people online.
The video taken in the woods of Nova Scotia in Canada shows the mossy ground moving up and down.
“The punishing prevailing winds have taken their toll on the side hill, the roots have loosened and the mossy ground from the once shaded forest floor are giving way, soon to be toppled over”, Nuttall said.
Brian Nuttall was out for a walk on a breezy October 30 in Apple River, Cumberland County, when he came across an unusual sight and pulled out his cellphone.
The video has been watched more than three million times since Mr Nuttall uploaded it to Facebook on November 1.
One theory is that because of strong winds, the roots of the trees are lifting the soft ground.
Social media users had their own ideas.
“The dead trees died awhile back…their roots causing space underground”, another Facebook user commented.
