Former Chelsea hitman attracting interest from MLS
EPSN’s Jeff Carlisle reported earlier this afternoon that MLS has made a contract offer to Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and that the Fire are making the strongest push for his services.
It is believed that several teams within the MLS are in the hunt to land Drogba, with the Chicago Fire now in pole position to seal the deal.
The contract number being thrown around is $2.5 million per year, and the report indicates he could decide his future this weekend.
Chicago Fire have hinted that they are in negotiations with Chelsea and Premier League legend Didier Drogba.
Drogba is a free agent after leaving Stamford Bridge on the back of Chelsea’s Premier League-winning campaign last season, and the former Cote d’Ivoire worldwide is reportedly in discussions with the Fire.
Chicago already has three Designated Players yet is willing to use the new Targeted Allocation Money to buy down the salary of either David Accam or Kennedy Igboananike in order to bring Drogba in. The two-time African Footballer of the Year scored 100 goals for Chelsea from 2004-12. He spent just seven months in China, later signing with Turkish club Galatasaray.
The Ivorian is one of the most storied strikers of the last decade, winning nearly every major trophy at club level and becoming the Ivory Coast’s all-time leading scorer, netting 65 times in 104 appearances.
