Former Detroit Lions coaches Jim Schwartz, Jeremiah Washburn land new jobs
Former Lions coach Jim Schwartz will be the Eagles’ next defensive coordinator, coach Doug Pederson announced in his introductory press conference.
The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly come to an agreement with Jim Schwartz to become the team’s next defensive coordinator.
Schwartz was the first assistant brought in by new head coach Doug Pederson.
The Jaguars continue their search for a new defensive coordinator by interviewing the top name on the market. Schwartz was Tennessee’s defensive coordinator for eight seasons before going to Detroit. Pat Shurmur served as the Eagles’ interim head coach for their Week 17 tilt with the Giants and is expected to remain in the running to return as offensive coordinator under Pederson. Detroit made it to the playoffs in 2011 after a 10-6 regular season, but collapsed at the end of the following two seasons and Schwartz was sacked. “People that I can trust, coaches that I can trust, coaches that I can trust are doing the best things for their players”. Under Ryan and Thurman, Buffalo’s defense regressed in 2015, finishing 19th in total defense and 15th in scoring defense.
Schwartz has a fiery personality; he was once engaged in a shouting match with 49ers’ coach Jim Harbaugh after he tried to shake Harbaugh’s hand-the 49ers had just beaten the Lions-and Harbaugh sort of gave him a high five on the way through.
Yes, Schwartz is a 4-3 proponent and yes, he makes use of the dreaded wide-9, but it’s not the basis of his scheme, simply something he attempts to utilize in certain alignments.
