Former Duke golfer Lang wins US Women’s Open
She was tied for second at the U.S. Women’s Open in 2005 at Cherry Hills and alone in second at the 2011 Women’s British Open. “So I don’t think there’s any problem there”. It’s been a long day, a long week.
“I don’t think anyone should feel sorry for me”, she said. The penalty, controversial in that it wasn’t given until after Johnson had completed the final round, ultimately was inconsequential because of Johnson’s margin of victory.
The penalty occurred on the 17th hole, the second in a three-hole aggregate playoff to decide the title. Lang then sealed the win with a short par putt on the final playoff hole, while Nordqvist made bogey to lose by three shots.
Lang becomes just the second American – joining Michelle Wie in 2014 – in the past six years to win the U.S. Open.
“Even though it didn’t finish the way I wanted it to, I still feel like there’s so many positives from this week”, Ko said.
“I just wish they would have told me a little earlier”.
According to rule 13-4b, a penalty is invoked if a club touches the sand in a bunker before the downswing, no matter how light the contact. I touched the sand so… a penalty. There were still nine more holes to go, and you just never know what (might have) happened. Then things got interesting on the next hole after Nordqvist hit her tee shot into a fairway bunker. A USGA staff member watching the live broadcast hadn’t observed any possible infraction. The USGA was notified and immediately began reviewing the footage.
San Martin: World number one Lydia Ko, seeking to add a third major title to her resume, birdied the 18th to take a one-shot lead after three rounds of the US Women’s Open on Saturday.
“It was definitely a shame for Anna for it to come down to something like that”, Lang said. “You know, Anna is such a great player, it’s so unfortunate to have something like that happen”.
Lang defended the USGA, saying she thought it handled it as best it could. I’m thankful they told me before my wedge shot so I could take a little bit more club. They told me after I hit my third shot.
Earlier, Ko looked to be on track for her third major. Lang went to a longer club, cautiously played to the back of the green and two-putted for par and the title.
After shooting a 75 in the second round to drop seven shots behind leader Park, this tournament didn’t appear to be the one where she would have her breakthrough. Hitting a 25-degree hybrid, which she hits 175 yards from a clean lie, she wasn’t able to get the ball 116 yards over the creek from what turned out to be a tougher spot than she thought.
Ko’s previous best finish at a US Open was 12th. Hindsight’s always 20-20 shoulda, woulda, coulda.
Her group was put on the clock at the turn.
“Unfortunately, I am not the one holding the trophy”, Ko said.
“I didn’t do it on goal”, said the 29-year-old Swede. It was the first time Maguire has competed in the U.S. Open. She came to the 72nd hole with a chance to get in the playoff with a birdie. I hit 17 greens today and missed one by two feet.
