Former Google and Apple employees prepare to launch Nextbit smartphone
If the name sounds familiar to you, that’s because Nextbit is a startup that has Google Ventures as a backer. Most young companies lack both the capital and the chops to truly offer a worthwhile alternative to Apple and Samsung. Nextbit’s chief technology officer Mike Chan also comes from Google, and the chief product officer is Scott Croyle, who TechnoBuffalo once worked closely with during his tenure at HTC developing hits such as the One M7 and One M8.
Therefore, it shouldn’t be such a big surprise that Nextbit is also gearing up to dab into hardware waters.
What do you hope to see from Nextbit’s Android smartphone?
Another iPhone copy this won’t be. The handset is expected to be priced in the “premium tier” of smartphones, ranging between $300 and $400.
The boldest claim about this mysterious new phone, however, is that it will get better over time.
The key to this design feature will be the company’s clever manipulation of Android. With all of that experience, it’s not hard to see why there’s excitement surrounding Nextbit and it’s upcoming Android phone. The idea is that the phone will be allowed to improve over time, something that will reportedly be achieved by virtue of continual software updates that will enable the phone to “function at a higher level”.
Another clue is found in Nextbit’s earlier work.
As CNET notes, the startup was originally formed to create a cloud-based tool that allows users to easily transfer files between Android devices.
It’s also suggested that, having hired one of the leading catalysts for the current obsession with classy metal phones, Nextbit will pursue a new kind of premium design. “We’re focusing on a device that can adapt to you”, he said, adding that future models will tackle issues with short smartphone battery life.
It’s all very intriguing. Keeping their cards close to their chest, Nextbit’s CEO wouldn’t divulge too much info, only mentioning in a recent in a recent interview that “It’s going to be friggin’ awesome”.
