Former Hillary Clinton opponent offers debate advice Donald Trump
Trump faces Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in the first of three debates Monday.
More than 12 hours before the debate starts at Hofstra University, Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook told NBC that “we don’t want Donald Trump’s lies and distortions to be a distraction”.
The current record for a televised presidential debate is 80.6 million viewers, set by the 1980 encounter between the Democratic incumbent, Jimmy Carter, and his Republican challenger, former California governor Ronald Reagan.
The visual alone will be striking.
Anita Dunn, who helped President Barack Obama prepare for debates against Republican nominee John McCain in 2008, said Obama succeeded at their first debate by steering the conversation repeatedly back to the struggling US economy even though the event was supposed to be about foreign policy. Trump has spent years on Americans’ television screens as a reality show host, but it can still be jarring to see him at politics’ upper echelons.
Clinton, a former NY senator and secretary of state, and Trump, a first-time candidate and reality TV star, are essentially tied with Election Day about six weeks away, according to essentially every major poll. But several newspapers with more conservative editorial boards, including the Dallas Morning News and Cincinnati Enquirer, also have recently endorsed Clinton.
The 9 p.m. debate will be broadcast live on C-SPAN, ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, and all cable news channels such as CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, etc.
If the billionaire businessman can show in the debate that he’s presidential, “maybe he could reassure some traditional Republicans he’s reasonable enough to vote for”, Webb said.
The Times said Clinton’s best argument for the White House was her ability to rise to the challenges facing the country. He also supports the Second Amendment like most people do.
Collins said the Republican nominee understands the importance of presenting “President Trump to the American public”.
But 65% say they do not find her honest.
Debates are a staple of presidential campaigns, but they seldom have a big influence on the outcome of the election.
“Style and presentation are nearly more important in many cases than what they’re actually saying”, said. “They kind of expect one thing”, said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of MI.
So Clinton has to stay on offense by showing a command of the issues, being calm, and rebutting Trump’s attacks without getting angry or getting into the mud with Trump.
Some Clinton supporters hope that if the race still seems close in late October, then the Johnson-Weld ticket, which is on the ballot in all 50 states, might throw in the towel in the interest of defeating the Republicans.
Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey recommended in July that no criminal charges be brought against Clinton for her handling of classified information while she was secretary of state, but he called her use of the server “extremely careless”.
Bill Weld, Johnson’s vice presidential candidate, said that the Libertarian ticket was taking equally from both sides. No one remembers what policy points Al Gore made in his first debate against George W. Bush.
Gennifer Flowers had an affair with #Bill Clinton, which the former president admitted to under oath in 1998. He said Trump’s proposal to deport all 11 million illegal immigrants “reminds me of Germany in the 1930s”.
He spoke shortly after joining other supportive lawmakers for a meeting Thursday with Trump political director Jim Murphy.
In a two-way match-up, Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton were even at 46 per cent of registered voters. And large minorities say they’d be angry (38 percent) or afraid (44 percent).
