Former Israeli statesman Peres returns to hospital with chest pains
The 92-year-old statesman had been discharged from a hospital on Tuesday. Nonetheless, the hospital said the former Israeli president would be kept overnight for observation at the intensive care unit, but wasn’t expected to undergo any invasive procedures.
An ambulance was called to his home on Sunday after Peres once again experienced chest pains, Israel’s Channel 2 reports.
Mr Peres, who was released from hospital last week after suffering a heart attack on January 14th, was conscious and the hospitalisation was a precautionary measure, Mr Peres’s aide Ayelet Frisch said.
Peres, a native of Poland, is credited with setting up Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
Shimon Peres has held numerous official positions in the Israeli regime during his seven decades of political life.
As Israeli foreign minister, he shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat after negotiating the Oslo Accords.
Despite his age, Mr Peres has maintained an active public schedule, mostly through his non-governmental Peres Centre for Peace, which promotes closer ties between Israel and the Palestinians.
