Former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard retires
Arsenal boss Wenger described Gerrard as a complete midfielder and expressed admiration for his loyalty to Liverpool despite attracting interest from other clubs throughout his career.
The star who played only 36 games for LA Galaxy scoring 5 goals explained his rationale for him to have retired from football. Thank you to the unbelievable fans of Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy for the incredible backing you have given me throughout my career.
He was capped 114 times by England, a tally bettered only by Peter Shilton, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham, and scored 21 global goals. In his eight year long stint at the club, the 28-year-old managed to score just nine goals in 181 appearances for the club.
El Hadji Diouf again slammed former team-mate Steven Gerrard after the Liverpool great confirmed his retirement.
AC Milan, a club that Gerrard tormented many times with his spectacular play, paid their respects.
At the worldwide level, he won 114 caps for England, making him his country’s fourth most capped player of all time after Peter Shilton, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham.
He joined LA Galaxy in 2015 after a stellar career with English club Liverpool.
Although the Brazilian midfielder was hugely underwhelming at Manchester United, the player won two League Cup medals, four Premier League medals and also a Champions League title with the Red Devils.
“There’s nothing to talk about and I’m the absolutely wrong person to tell anything about it because maybe all of you know him better than I do”. Your loyalty and support has meant the world. You don’t need me. Thank you to all of you. You’ve been there throughout both the good times and the bad and without you nothing would have been possible.
Gerrard, who has also been linked with coaching roles at Liverpool, Newcastle and Celtic, will focus initially on work as a television pundit but plans to return to the game in a more formal capacity.
He is now working his UEFA A coaching licence, the second-highest qualification available, and said he would be making an announcement about the next stage of his career ‘very soon’.
