Former Michigan GOP Chair Calls For Electoral College Reform
He specifically said he would have campaigned more in NY and California, but Clinton won the popular vote in both of those states by wide margins.
But because a less populated state like Wyoming is guaranteed at least three electors, its citizens’ votes carry more weight than in a state like California, which has 55 electors.
Clinton won 62,825,754 votes as of this writing (believe it or not, ballots are still being counted). Clinton holds a seven-point edge in MI, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average; she is up 8.5 points in New Mexico, according to Real Clear. The state’s director of elections, Chris Thomas, said there was one Detroit precinct that hadn’t been counted until Wednesday afternoon because of a technical glitch.
In the days following the 2008 election, 27 percent of Americans told Gallup they had a unfavorable view of Barack Obama, compared to 68 percent who had a favorable view. Some states, like California, count absentee votes that arrive after the election, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.
“America is worth it, our children are worth it”, she said at a Children Defense Fund event honoring scholarship winners. The number of votes of the Electoral College is now 528. It seems unlikely, though, that electors pledged to Trump would switch to Clinton rather than to another Republican.
Trump leads Clinton in Michigan by about 13,000 votes, according to the Michigan Department of State. That means 40 percent of the time in this century the victor of popular vote lost. The state has until November 28 to make the results official. In this century two out of five times (in 2000 and 2016), the victor of the popular vote lost the election.
Each state receives the number of electors in the Electoral College that it has elected officials in Congress: one per House of Representatives member and one per Senator. Not surprisingly most came from the liberal strangleholds of California and NY. Instead, it advocates for The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which is an agreement that would have states award their electoral votes to the victor of the popular vote.
As noted by Vox’s Brad Plumer, it is predictable that California should be leading the charge to dismantle the Electoral College.
In 2000, Democratic candidate Al Gore received about 500,000 more votes than Republican George W. Bush, but Bush had 271 electoral votes to Gore’s 266 to win the presidency. Magarian says since the Electoral College has only hurt Democrats, Republicans will fight to keep it in place. Rather than counting all voters equally, the Electoral College empowers some voters over others, exclusively based on where they live.
Nearly a third – 28 percent – of respondents said they expected Trump to become one of the best presidents in U.S. history.
That is not what happened in this year’s presidential election.
No one has been able to devise anything better than the Electoral College to give all voters a voice, and to give the president a broad base of support from which to govern. As he has stated he would have had a completely different strategy if he were campaigning for the popular vote.
