Former Moc Terrell Owens makes NFL Hall of Fame
Bobby Beathard gets in via the contributor committee. He was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXV for his role in the Ravens’ 34-7 win over the New York Giants, as he anchored what is arguably one of the greatest defenses in National Football League history.
Brazile, 64, was a Houston Oiler throughout his 10-year career, making seven Pro Bowls in a row.
The heart and soul of the Philadelphia Eagles during his time in the City of Brotherly Love, Brian Dawkins was a force to be reckoned with.
Lewis played 17 career seasons – all with the Baltimore Ravens.
MINNEAPOLIS – Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher terrorized opposing offenses from the middle of the field.
Urlacher clearly is as deserving as Lewis and Moss, but because he has carried a much lower profile off the field and the committee rarely inducts multiple players at the same position in a single class, his and Owens’ selections slightly were less certain.
Ladies and gentlemen, Terrell Owens has finally made the Hall of Fame. It has some great names, including two of the greatest linebackers and two of the greatest receivers to play the game. This was Moss’ first year on the Hall of Fame ballot and he is the first wide receiver to get voted in during his first year of eligibility since Jerry Rice in 2010.
I’m not going to slam the voters themselves.
Well, I wonder what the bust will be saying tonight as Washington Redskins offensive lineman Joseph “Joe” Erwin Jacoby, a member of the legendary “HOGS”, once again gets overlooked from being selected to be among the NFL’s all-time greatest players?
“I just wanted to stay even keel, no ups and downs, ” Moss said. “I don’t want to work out every day now”.
The majority of Moss’ career was spent with the Minnesota Vikings, where his speed and height were primarily showcased.
The receiver played for the Vikings from 1998-2004 before being traded to Oakland in 2005.
By nature, all sports Hall of Fame selection processes are flawed, but I’ve always believed the NFL’s is the closest to getting it right.
And as for whether T.O. has forgiven the people who argued against his induction for two years… we’ll let this tweet speak for itself.
Moss hauled in 982 receptions for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns.
Owens had five 1,200-yard receiving seasons, and is second all time in receiving yards (15,934) and third in touchdown catches (153) behind only fellow 2018 inductee Randy Moss and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.
Moss, former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher were elected in their first year of eligibility.
“I feel more disrespected than disappointed”, Owens said.
He was the player personnel director for the Dolphins in 1972, when Miami became the first (and only) team to finish the season with an undefeated record. Lewis then broke a leg tackle by George and ran 50 yards down the sideline for his first career touchdown.
In 1999-2000, I helped UTC put together a history book called “Mocs Football: A History”, so I went back and looked at it for information about the star player. Lewis was also fined $250,000 by the NFL. He became the first player in National Football League history with a sack, interception, fumble recovery and touchdown catch in the same game against Houston in 2002. He was also a six-time Pro Bowler and a four-time All-Pro.
Cornerback Ty Law also made it to the final 10 in his second time on the ballot.
