Former NBA Star Charles Oakley Banned From Madison Square Garden
And alienating one of the most beloved Knicks of all time is not a good look.
You knew the chants were coming. “The Timberwolves.” They exchange nods, then drags.
It’s thirty minutes to tip-off. Serbian center Nikola Jokic hit for a career-high 40 points, making 16 of 22 from the field with eight rebounds. Something bigger is notably amiss.
If anyone thought Dolan was going to take to the airwaves to offer some sort of olive branch to Oakley, they were mistaken.
Now yes this guy is a jerk but he shouldn’t be kicked out for a “Free Oakley” chant.
While the initial incident seemed like a PR low for the organization, the Knicks have now reportedly banned Oakley from the arena for life. That was 20 years ago.
“It’s frustrating not to be able to give the fans what they want”.
Oakley was led out in handcuffs and charged with three misdemeanors before being released later that evening. He told Fox 5 that he did nothing wrong and was just sitting in his seat watching the game. Both sides have doubled down on their versions of the story, the Knicks calling him belligerent and Oakley maintaining innocence.
Dolan said that Oakley would be welcomed back if he cleans up his act. Mostly Jim Dolan is surrounded with sycophants and henchmen who help him carry out his petty grudges and person feuds. The damage will be done, the stage set and a line drawn in the sand.
The move comes two days after Oakley became embroiled in a pushing and shoving match with security personnel just a few rows behind Dolan’s courtside seats and was hauled off and arrested by the NYPD in front of TV cameras. “Man won’t even shake my hand”. He chuckles and shakes his head.
“I can’t explain why – we have video tape, we have dozens of statements, etc”. “I don’t know how you do that”.
Considering his past, Knicks fans ought to take that as a threat.
It started with the swirling rumours around Carmelo Anthony’s future. Remember Derrick Rose’s freakish disappearance?
“He should be up there being recognised because the fans do love him”, Dolan said.
On the day Charles Oakley was banned from Madison Square Garden, the current Knicks proved again they can’t play defense anywhere near the way his Knicks teams did, and lost their fourth straight. Dolan came to the decision to ban, Oakley from Madison Square Garden because he could possibly be a safety risk to those in attendance. “I am not going to weigh in on those things that I said I wouldn’t weigh in on”. Someone in an old J.R. Smith Nuggets jersey eats wings at the bar.
