Former Oklahoma Cop Found Guilty of Multiple Rapes, Faces Life in Prison

Holtzclaw was sacked before the trial began.

Jurors chose punishments ranging from five to 30 years.

The 12-member jury in the case – eight men and four women – had deliberated since Monday.

Sentencing was set for January and he could face life in prison.

“I was innocent, and he just picked the wrong lady to stop that night”, she added.

“Where is the national outcry for their justice?” asked Crump, who has also represented the families of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.

The packed courtroom remained mostly calm as the verdicts were read.

Defence attorney Scott Adams said Holtzclaw was an honourable police officer whose activities were made to appear evil and suspicious. He has denied the charges against him and is expected to file an appeal. These police officers are part of a larger system in the United States which sanctions the abuse of Black women, silences them after they have been abused, and delegitimises their pain by rarely criminalizing the perpetrators of this cycle.

Ligons later went to police and media outlets with the first complaint against Holtzclaw, she said.

The case against Holtzclaw raised the topic of race as all of this victims were black. He has denied the allegations.

Cameras were not allowed in court during the Daniel Holtzclaw trial, except during the verdict announcement.

Holtzclaw has been identified in court records as Asian or Pacific Islander.

Holtzclaw was convicted Thursday night of preying on the teenager and other women he met on his police beat in a minority, low-income neighborhood. He said defense attorneys kicked off the only jury candidates who were black.

“We know that he’s not the only officer running around raping people”, Franklin said. “In those counts where the not verdicts came back, they determined that we didn’t prove those cases beyond a reasonable doubt”. Sexual misconduct was the second most common form of police misconduct reported in 2010, according to the CATO Institute’s 2010 annual report. Judge Henderson and lead prosecutor Gayland Gieger both remarked they had never been involved in such a long jury deliberation process.

Other victims had also said during testimonies that they did not think reporting the matter to police was going to help.

He was found not guilty on the other 18 counts he was facing.

The victims of his increasingly brazen pattern of attacks, prosecutors say, included an underage girl and a grandmother, The Daily Beast reported.
