Former Pakistani cricket captain Wasim Akram escapes shooting
The accused had engaged in a brawl with cricket legend Wasim Akram in an apparent road range incident but soon drew out his gun and opened fire and then fled the scene. The nabbed suspect is a private security guard, a TV channel reported on Friday.
The 49-year-old Akram, one of the best left-arm fast bowlers ever to play the game, was on his way to the National Stadium where he was to conduct a training camp for young fast bowlers.
Former Pakistan skipper and head of the political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Imran Khan tweeted that he was glad to hear Wasim was safe. A person stepped out of the back seat and opened fire at the vehicle, though the former fast bowler was able to escape unhurt. According to reports in the Pakistan media, a shaken but alert Akram called the police helpline and registered a complaint after the attack.
“The police is confused either with the wrong vehicle number or other details inadvertently provided by Akram”, said Abid Qaimkhani, the Senior Superintendent of Police, who is leading the investigation. He added that he will be handing over the vehicle’s registration number, that Akram had shared with the police while registering the police case, to seek the assistance of the excise department.
Akram is regarded as one of the greatest pacers of all time. He is also now employed as the bowling coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.
