Former Pittsburgh Steeler Joe Greene reunites with Coca Cola commercial co-star
In return, Greene gives him his Jersey.
In the upcoming Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials 2016 special that will air on CBS, a reunion between Greene and Tommy Okon, who played the young kid in the commercial, will be shown and it features the two reminiscing about the filming the Clio Award-winning commercial.
“I don’t know about that”, Okon said.
Recently, Greene and Okon reunited, 40 years after their history making commercial.
In the newly publicized clip, Tommy Okon, now a grown man, meets up with the football legend at Apogee Stadium in Denton, Texas.
People magazine points out that the commercial didn’t even debut during the Super Bowl – it debuted in October 1979 and then re-aired in 1980 during Super Bowl XIV. While Greene credits Okon’s adorable performance for the ad’s lasting appeal, his co-star says the commercial works because it embodies Greene’s personality: “tough football player who’s a nice guy”.
Greene no longer looks like a hard-nosed football player, while Okon is now in his 40s, but it’s still heartwarming to see the pair from one of the best commercials of all-time reunite. Yet it’s one of the best-remembered ads from a game that many people now watch just because of the commercials.
The celebration continues with “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials All-Star Countdown” at 8 p.m. February 6 on CBS.
