The news emerged after BBC Sport ended its Formula 1 television contract three years early to make substantial savings for the corporation.
Schmitz, who is a former driver for BMW in the World Touring Car Championship and a TV presenter, has featured on “Top Gear” twice before.
Appearing as a guest on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen recently, he did reveal the first episode would air on Sunday May 8. The report also speculates that former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard may join the cast. Clarkson, Hammond, and May then signed a deal with Amazon Prime for a new show that will also premiere in 2016.
