Former Stanford student convicted of rape scheduled to leave jail this week
The Sara Clara County Jail was contacted to verify but did not immediately respond.
California lawmakers passed new legislation sealing a legal loophole exposed by the lenient prison sentence approved for former Stanford student Brock Turner after he sexually assaulted an unconscious woman. When two graduate students approached him to make sure the woman was alright, Turner fled – only to be tackled moments later and held down until police arrived at the scene. Sources tell NBC News there is a planned protest outside of the jail on Friday. Despite the fact that the defendant was eligible for a sentence of up to 14 years in prison, Judge Aaron Persky sentenced the defendant to 6 months in jail and 3 years’ probation.
He added: “That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life”. “He will never be his happy-go-lucky self with that easygoing personality and welcoming smile”. Mostly, we thank Emily Doe for her courageous letter. The woman, who has not been identified, penned a powerful 12-page statement widely shared online that she directed at Turner.
“Someone who can not take full accountability for his actions does not deserve a mitigating sentence”.
More than 1 million people signed petitions calling for the removal of Persky from his judicial position.
Turner’s sentence has also inspired attempts to remove County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky, who is responsible for Turner’s sentence. The white male judge, who had also played sports at Stanford, made a decision to give Turner what was considered a very lenient sentence-six months.
Mr Ramirez admitted to sexually assaulting a female roommate. “The well-intentioned mandatory minimum sentence this bill creates will have negative impacts on communities of color and other unintended consequences”, she said.
Under mounting pressure, Persky was reassigned last week to hear only civil cases. He faced mounting backlash stemming from his perceived bias in sentencing.
“Rape is rape, and rapists like Brock Turner shouldn’t be let off with a slap on the wrist”, said assembly member Low.
