Former Tigers pitcher sentenced in assault case
Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Evan Reed is expected to be placed on probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated assault.
He is also ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and pay just under $4,500 in restitution.
The charges stem from an encounter last year, the evening before opening day.
Reed was accused of assaulting a woman in a hotel room at Motor City Casino in March of 2014. She says she blacked out after drinking and awoke naked in bed with Reed. The plea, which prosecutors considered to be “in the best interests of justice” was strongly opposed by the victim who continues to maintain that she was forcibly raped by Reed.
Reed admitted, as is seen in a security video shown in court, that he helped carry the woman inside the casino – but he insisted they had consensual sex.
“I have sleepless nights because of what this so-called man did to me”, the woman said in court this morning. On the stand, the woman then offered some unsettling details as to what allegedly happened next. “I will fight him until the bitter end on behalf of myself and anyone else he may have done this to”. He entered the plea last month in an agreement with prosecutors to resolve a sexual assault case.
But she said “all parties” were honest while addressing the court Friday.
The victim also said she’s unhappy with her portrayal in the media.
“I have been painted as a sleazy, money-hungry cougar”, she said.
Attorneys for Reed declined to comment Friday after the sentencing.
District Judge Kenneth King on November. 21 dismissed the charges. “Let it be known that I am none of these things”.
Defense attorney Ben Gonek has said Reed is training and working out daily in California.
