Former US President Jimmy Carter has ‘four spots of melanoma on brain’
Former US President Jimmy Carter might have cancer in his brain but he certainly does not have cancer on the brain.
“Doctors tell me that about 98 percent of melanomas are skin cancer and about 2 percent are internal”, Carter said during a news conference.
Carter said he felt good, with only slight pain after the liver surgery.
Four “small spots” of melanoma on his brain will receive four treatments with radiation at three-week intervals, Carter said.
“I’ve had a wonderful life, thousands of friends and I’ve had an exciting adventurous existence, so I was surprisingly at ease, much more than my wife was”, said Carter, who added he still plans to teach Sunday school as long as he’s able to.
“We have been putting out signs for decades for President Carter, and this one is just another one for him to win this non partisan campaign for cancer”, said Jill Stucky, who has been campaigning for the Carters for years.
He said he accepted his doctors’ recommendation on a course of treatment, including infusions of Keytruda.
So it was sad to hear Carter announce this week that he’s battling cancer that has spread to his brain and, at the same time, impressive to listen to him talk with such equanimity about his circumstances.
“Most of the time, melanoma is just pure skin cancer, but if you can find it early, that will be the best chance for cure”. He said had been committed “up until this morning” to flying to Nepal in November to build more houses on a Habitat for Humanity trip.
“This is not a eulogy in any way”, said grandson Jason Carter, who is taking over as chairman of the board of trustees at the Carter Center, which promotes peace, democracy and health care improvements around the world. “Like my nearly getting killed on a submarine, and also the lessons that I’ve learned, some of which were very negative at the time, some of which were positive”. “I’m looking forward to a new adventure”.
Clad in a sport coat, red tie and blue jeans, Carter appeared relaxed, smiling frequently and joking at times as he discussed his condition candidly.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt my descendants have some genetic challenge from the pancreatic cancer and my melanoma”, he said.
“But I was, surprisingly, at ease”.
But meanwhile back in the tiny town of Plains, Georgia, residents of Carter’s hometown had decided on a tribute of their own: hundreds of campaign signs lining the streets to which Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, were to return on Thursday evening.
More information is coming out about the type of cancer Former President Jimmy Carter is fighting.
Carter served as President between 1977 and 1981, and has been very active in humanitarian efforts during his post-presidential life.
Biggest regret: Not sending “one more helicopter”, which could have possibly turned the failed attempt to rescue the 52 American hostages in Iran into a success – thereby rescuing his presidency. He will also continue doing some work with the Carter Center, which is something he had spoken about scaling back on since his 80 birthday 11 years ago, according to the National Journal.
As for the work of the Carter Center, he said it would be eradication of an ancient parasitic infection called Guinea worm disease, now confined to a handful of countries of Africa.
