Formidable Bayern Crush Arsenal to Top Group
Arsene Wenger’s side were left with a mountain to climb when Robert Lewandowski scored the opener after just 11 minutes in Bavaria and they were comprehensively outplayed and outclassed throughout, with goals from David Alaba, Arjen Robben and a Thomas Muller brace giving Bayern a resounding win. Olympiakos also has nine after edging 10-man Dinamo Zagreb 2-1, which also has three points.
“You [need to] win two games and we need to make sure that the head to head against Olympiacos is in our favour”.
Wenger was clearly not impressed: “I believe first you have to give credit to Bayern for their quality, and on top of that we made things quite easy for them with our defensive performance”.
“There are a few positives in the second half but obviously we need to do better defensively and be more aggressive because we allowed them too much time on the ball”.
Arsenal entered the day in last place in their UEFA Champions Group, but they had a chance to improve their position with a good result against Bayern Munich in Germany.
“There is still a chance to qualify”, Wenger said. But “our chances are very minimal”.
“If we win our next game now, we should be through, so tonight was a big step”.
The Bavarians secured a 5-1 victory against the Gunners on Wednesday night to move six points clear of the English side in their Champions League group, with just two matches still to play. The amusing thing is that when we went forward we looked like we were going to create chances and we did create chances but with a defensive performance like that we are going nowhere.
Arsenal headed into the game with Bayern Munich this week full of confidence after five league wins on the trot, but were sent back down to earth due to Guardiola’s team’s masterclass. It’s a small chance but a real one.
“We will fight until the last minute”, Cech said.
Even then they could still find themselves to Thursday night action in the Europa League, if the Greek champions pick up a surprise point or three at Bayern Munich – an outcome that would put them out of sight. “In the second half, we lost a bit of possession, but that can happen if you are ahead 3-0 or 4-0”.
Many Arsenal fans took to social media outlets on Thursday saying they would rather Arsenal finish bottom of the group and be eliminated from European competition altogether rather than finish third and qualify for the Europa League.
