Fort Campbell pilots killed in chopper crash
The U.S. Army late Wednesday confirmed that an Apache helicopter from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, crashed near the base.
The news release about the two pilots came early Thursday morning after the helicopter went down at about 7 p.m.in Montgomery County.
The helicopter, which is a Boeing AH-64 Apache, was later found on fire near Gholson Road in Montgomery County. The names of the pilots haven’t been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities did not immediately say if there were fatalities in the two-seat helicopter. The crash was being investigated by the Army Combat Readiness Center.
Officials said the Apache helicopter went down near the intersection of Gholson Road and Hickory Point Road. The station reported the chopper crashed and caught fire.
Between 1987 and 1999, seven Fort Campbell helicopter crashes resulted in 22 deaths and dozens of injuries in Tennessee, according to news accounts.
