Four-gong conclusion as Adele makes Brits history
A tearful Adele has been crowned queen of the British music scene – and has banished memories of Grammy Awards sound glitches – with four prizes and a soulful performance at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night.
The 2016 BRIT Awards have wrapped up in London tonight and unlike last week’s Grammys ceremony, the Aussies didn’t walk away empty handed.
The Hello hitmaker took to the stage in her cleavage-baring red gown to pick up the iconic gong.
Adele took advantage of her first win to announce she was supporting singer Kesha, who has been embroiled in a lawsuit with her mentor-producer Dr Luke.
As it stands, Adele’s total of four awards is equaled only by Blur, who won the same number in 1995 for their album Parklife.
However, Adele lost out to One Direction in the fan-voted category British Artist Video Of The Year which they won for “Drag Me Down“.
They were typically humble in their acceptance of the award telling a packed out London O2 Arena “It’s already fantastic to be invited, let alone be given an award to accept”.
British rapper Stormzy, who won best Grime act at the Mobo (Music of Black Origin) awards in 2014 and 2015 and who had a top 10 hit previous year, said he was disappointed his kind of music was not celebrated.
“You’re getting… bored of me”, she quipped, accidentally slipping an expletive into the live telecast.
This year’s BRIT Awards featured numerous incredible performances including Lorde paying tribute to David Bowie, Adele bringing down the house with “When We Were Young”, and Rihanna and Drake burning their way through a blistering performance of “Work”.
Bieber was named best global male artist and told the audience “this just shows life is a journey” and added “everyone has their ups and downs”. All the British nominees this year were white. They beat out Alabama Shakes, Eagles of Death Metal, Major Lazer and U2 to the award, much to the joy of Kevin Parker’s BFF, Mark Ronson.
Meanwhile, late visionary British rock star David Bowie was honoured with a posthumous “Icon” award.
The ceremony, which mainly recognises British music, also saw global awards handed out to Justin Bieber, Tame Impala and Bjork.
