Four Republican Governors Voice Opposition to House GOP Health-Care Legislation
A group opposed to changes in the Affordable Care Act took its message to the street. John Kasich, the Governor of the state, even met with President Trump regarding the expansion recently.
“It’s the best insurance I’ve ever had and I’m really upset I’m going to lose it”, Cox said.
But Trump still appeared open to some improvements to the bill, speaking in support of the ultimate product.
The legislation, House Joint Resolution 81, has no co-sponsors.
Conservative Republicans who met Trump said he agreed to changes on the Medicaid government insurance program for the poor.
The second question regarding quality of health care is more hard to quantify, but it is becoming abundantly clear that the House Republicans are more interested in decreasing the federal deficit than improving the health of the American people. Republicans hold a narrow margin in the Senate and can afford to lose only two votes – and Heller joins other Republicans there who have expressed serious concerns, including Ohio Senator Rob Portman, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, and Maine’s Susan Collins. Medicaid covers more than 70 million people, and its future is expected to be a central issue in the Senate.
The eagerly awaited CBO report also forecast that 24 million more people would be uninsured in 2026 if the plan being considered in the House of Representatives were adopted. Obamacare was broken for people in this group. And New Jersey should focus on lowering costs.
The couple bought health insurance for their kids, but not for themselves. After all, I had been paying for it for years. Older Americans don’t want to go backwards. In 10 years before ACA, the average cost of employer-provided family plans rose from $5,790 to $13,375.
Reichert, who represents the 8th Congressional District, has remained mum, declining so far to comment the CBO numbers, despite multiple requests. Unfortunately, this is an unfunded mandate and uncompensated costs to hospitals will rise if the GOP kicks about 14 million people off Obamacare next year, which is what the CBO predicts. The GOP replacement bill would gut the assistance for many of those voters, even while middle income voters would see benefits. “Every single person sitting in this room is now a yes”.
Subsidies for insurance now tied to low incomes will give way to tax credits which get incrementally higher with age, further hurting younger low-income folks struggling to make ends meet. The plan would also reduce subsidies used to buy insurance. What’s more, when Republicans took control of both chambers of Congress in 2015, they dumped the longtime and well-respected director of the CBO, Douglas Elmendorf, and replaced him with Keith Hall, a proponent of “dynamic” scoring methods that generally see GOP proposals in a more favorable light. It suggests that a plan with a $1,500 deductible, an 80 percent coinsurance rate (the plan pays 80 percent of costs above the deductible and below the maximum out-of-pocket threshold), and a $7,200 maximum out-of-pocket limit would have an actuarial value of 73 percent.
Ryan told a news conference that Trump was “deeply involved” and “helping bridge gaps” among Republican lawmakers to get a consensus plan.
“They’ll cut a program like a maternal care program or something like that”, he said.
The bill would keep Medicaid expansion funds through 2019 but after that would offer states enhanced funding only for those already covered. In 2016, 12.7 million Americans signed up, while 12.2 million signed up in 2017. This is why the CBO projects such large declines in Medicaid enrollment. The wealthier a taxpayer is, the more tax breaks he or she would receive.
It’s not surprising to some experts that Trump is not living up to his promises. “You just can’t do it”.
