The infected woman, however, is not pregnant and recovering well while at low risk of any complications, said the French minister of social affairs, health and women’s rights, Marisol Touraine, on Saturday.
Zika seldom causes serious illness. Since then, an estimated 1.5 million people are believed to have been infected in the country, and a total of 46 nations have reported some level of Zika infection.
Typical symptoms in those who do become unwell include fever, joint pain, conjunctivitis, headaches and an itchy rash.
There is no cure or treatment for the virus, which is usually transmitted by mosquitoes and has spread mostly in Latin America.
In an update, the CDC describes four further sexually transmitted Zika cases as “probable”, with two suspected cases being disproven.
In a statement, CDC warns pregnant women against traveling to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil out of Zika outbreak concerns. “I’ve never seen the like in my career”.
One of the women who had an abortion was in her 30s and had contracted the virus during her first trimester while traveling to a Zika-affected area, the agency said. “CDC advises men with pregnant sex partners to use condoms or abstain from sex for the duration of pregnancy”.
Pregnant women are recommended to consider not going to the event, or to talk to their physician if they find the need to go. CDC has alist of Zika symptoms on its website. If they choose to go, they should take steps to avoid any contact with mosquitoes.
According to Fox News, a case study report of a newborn whose Brazilian mother was infected with the virus hints the virus could be linked to a condition called hydraencephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with fluid instead of a brain. Public health investigators are continuing their efforts to answer this question. Officials did not identify the area of LA county where she lives.
Zika also may increase the risk of Guillan-Barré Syndrome, a problem marked by muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.
